"I am not a number, I'm a free man," bellowed the Prisoner. Greedy sod, he should have been grateful, because Coventry City striker Paul Williams is remembered in the tomes of football folly by just a solitary letter. Yes, one blessed letter.

TRANSFER MISS FOR CRIS...
WEDNESDAY 6th AUGUST 2008

Ronaldo is staying! It's the news every United fan has been praying for, and every non-United fan has been dreading.

It always strikes me as puzzling the number of players who switch clubs in August just as the season is about to start having endured an entire pre-season with an outfit they evidently couldn't wait to get away from. It's not as if clubs and agents haven't had the entirety of the summer during which to lay some cards on the table.

The Gary Barry saga is now about as entertaining as an hour-long special of Eastenders involving some part of Dot's past that we neither know nor care about, but while we accept that the Villa playmaker will obviously end up in a penthouse overlooking the Mersey, it seems that twinkle-toes Ron really is destined for at least one more season at Old Trafford.

We've seen many sides of the Portuguese flyer - the Riverdance fan, Gazza impersonator, Olympic diving runner-up (to Didier Drogba), and undoubtedly an incredible winker of the highest order.

But we've never really witnessed him in full 'sulk mode', something I for one would be interested to witness, particularly with Ronaldo confined to bench-warming duties following some sub-standard and disinterested early-season performances, shunned by his teammates and with little else for company but a Madrid tourist guide and the latest Los Lobos LP on his iPod.

Stranger things Rodders, stranger things...
