"I
am not a number, I'm a free man," bellowed the
Prisoner. Greedy sod, he should have been grateful,
because Coventry City striker Paul Williams is remembered
in the tomes of football folly by just a solitary letter.
Yes, one blessed letter.

SAVE
SVEN - HIS LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT...
SATURDAY
3rd MAY 2008 |
 |
 |
 |
I
knew Manchester was full of strange types
when I used to do some work for the red
half of the City.
|
Visiting
Old Trafford was like something out of
one of those dreams where your late aunt
is cycling on the roof of your house juggling
monkeys, while Bob Carolgees is putting
the finishing touches to his homemade
jelly scrabble set in the greenhouse.
The
reason I say that is because those within
the walls of power at O/T are all Manchester
City supporters. It certainly left me
wondering if they declared an undying
passion for the likes of Uwe Rosler and
Andy Dibble on their job applications.
And more to the point, why would you want
a job at United in the first place?
Anyway, this week the Blue half are at
it again after the city's bastion of profligate
press, the Manchester Evening News, launched
their 'Save Sven' campaign. (Essentially,
they've bought up all the old Sun World
Cup 2006 flags and tipp-ex'd over the
letters 'c-k' with 'v-e'.)
|
|
They're
inviting fans to hold aloft their
posters and textiles, decorate shop
windows, and record videos of support
(no, really) for the MEN website.
The last time the
city was this up-in-arms it looked
as if Deidre Rashid was heading
towards a dark hellish place bereft
of light and any basic civil privileges.
And no, I'm not talking about Hull.
Mind you, with Shinawatra's
human rights record, Sven could
be heading the same way.
