"I am not a number, I'm a free man," bellowed the Prisoner. Greedy sod, he should have been grateful, because Coventry City striker Paul Williams is remembered in the tomes of football folly by just a solitary letter. Yes, one blessed letter.

TROUBLE BREWING AT THE PRIESTFIELD...
SATURDAY 26th APRIL 2008

There could be trouble brewing this weekend, not at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea play United in a title ‘six-pointer’ or Celtic Park, where Celtic and Rangers face off but Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium.

Defeat for the Gills against Swindon Town today could not only see them relegated (depending on what Cheltenham manage at Oldham), it could also re-open old wounds.

Gillingham and Swindon? Rivals, you say?

Yep. Despite being separated by 126.26 miles, London and loads of other places, like Reading, the two clubs share a mutual hatred for each other.

They two were united for the first time in 19 years in 2006; there was bad blood then, as Gillingham helped Swindon into League Two by stuffing them 3-0, and it could be the same today, especially if Swindon return the favour.

The rivalry traces back to March 1979 when, with both teams in the running for promotion (it must have been a long time ago), Swindon visited Priestfield one place behind the Gills, but with two games in hand.

The first leg finished 2-2, but Gillingham had goalscorer Westwood sent off for foul and abusive language while a home fan got onto the pitch and punched the referee - knocking him out.

In the return leg there was a huge fracas in the tunnel, culminating in Swindon coach Wilf Tranter having to go to hospital with facial injuries. Two Gills players ended up in court over the incident. One Gillingham fan ended up dead.

Hopefully there’ll be no injuries today, but a Swindon win could make one particularly rivalry even more intense.
