POMPEY IN HOMEGROWN RECRUITMENT SHOCKER...
TUESDAY 15th JULY 2008

Has Harry Redknapp been at
the sherry?

The sign of Englishmen - and footballers at that - flocking to Fratton Park seems something of a peculiarity given the British bulldog manager's insistence on recruiting anyone of foreign persuasion over the past couple of seasons.

Redknapp has been a vocal critic of the overpriced homegrown market, and has gladly crammed as many tongue-twisting surnames onto his teamsheet as possible, and bar a mild squad exodus for the African Cup of Nations, the formula has worked very well indeed.

I had the signing of Jermaine Defoe down as a reckless mistake - when has it not been for any club?

So what's all this nonsense about Peter Crouch rocking up again on the South coast? And this morning, I read that Chelsea's Wayne Bridge fancies a bit of the Sandbanks sunshine as well.

I'm all up for a few gasps at transfer market headlines, but I spat out fewer cornflakes at the sight of Robinho being linked with a cut-price £48million move to Stamford Bridge than I did all this Pompey malarkey.

My biggest fear is that Darren Anderton is carrying on for another year just down the road at Bournemouth, and Harry has definitely got his number...

Darren Anderton! I (and probably 90% of the population) forgot he ever existed! He's definitely a one time forgot.
