Football League and non-league clubs
burst into life with all the fervour
of revitalised energy, exciting new
signings, and mammoth points deduction,
while for the strictly Premier League-centric
among you, Sunday's Community Shield
pools together all the talent and guile
of two teams more desperate to avoid
injuries than they are bothered about
picking up a slab of silver.
But on top of all that, there are potentially
some serious remote control battery-draining
issues going on. The Olympics (if you
can make out the athletes through the
thick smog), motorsport, cricket, and
no doubt some handball on EuroSport
- it's all going on.
So while you're sat osmosising with
the sofa and contemplating at what point
of the freestyle wrestling competition
you'll choose to retrieve another lager
from the fridge, do spare a thought
for those less fortunate/intelligent
who will be traipsing the length of
country in celebration of the new footy
season.
For every West Ham there is a Wrexham,
and for every Man United, a Mansfield,
and the Conference's two newest recruits
will be brought straight down to earth
at 3pm tomorrow when the reality of
their lot hits home. For so long proud
Football League clubs who had danced
with the top-level elite in FA Cup clashes
over the years, they now enter a new
phase in their 'development', with Stevenage
Borough and Ebbsfleet United greeting
their landmark non-league debuts.
And they say it's about the
competing, not the winning - apparently.
