"I
am not a number, I'm a free man," bellowed the
Prisoner. Greedy sod, he should have been grateful,
because Coventry City striker Paul Williams is remembered
in the tomes of football folly by just a solitary letter.
Yes, one blessed letter.

MUTU'S
COCAINE BLUES...
MONDAY
9th JUNE 2008 |
 |
 |
 |
There's
something peculiar yet familiar about the
manner in which Chelsea's incessant pursuit
of Adriano Mutu has gathered pace over the
last 24 hours.
The revelation emerged over the weekend
of the Blues' £9.6million compensation
chase of the Romanian following his cocaine
bust. |
|
It
intrigues me why these things typically
kick-off on the very day that Mutu steps
out in a Romania shirt at the Euros -
and not on any of the 1,335 days since
his sacking. (And yes, I did count.)
Other things that strike me as odd are
that, firstly, it was Chelsea's decision
to sack the player, rather than 'standing
by him' - cue mental images of Paul Merson
and Tony Adams; plus, if my employers
were to sack me for gross negligence,
I can't imagine me getting a bill for
the amount they paid my recruitment consultant.
Mind you, I could easily clear that invoice,
since those pen-pushers at Top Jobs Inc
wouldn't touch me with a barge poll. "Over-qualified
they said" .. or was it 'under'?
Anyway, more than anything else, £9.6million
to Chelsea would equate to me fishing
out 17p from down the back of the sofa,
so it seems a bizarre way to appear even
more unpopular before the eyes of the
general footy public by pursuing a man
who has rebuilt his career following his
"drugs hell".
And it must have been hell. I've heard
of being stung in alleyways off Charing
Cross by big geezers selling talcum powder,
but £9.6million for a wrap of coke
seems a little bit keen to me ..
