FIRED UP FOR A CAREER CHANGE?
THURSDAY 24th APRIL 2008

"You're fired!" slobbered Alan Sugar, his craggy qwerty finger signaling the death knell for another 'Apprentice' candidate whose only real achievement had seemingly been to kid everyone that she had even the remotest business brain.

I've witnessed more intelligence than that spying Jermain Defoe and Sean Davis having a game of Snap on the Pompey team coach.

But it did get me thinking of famously public football firings. The drugs slurs are ten-a-penny, but it's all in the privacy of your own home (or the Boujis nightclub bogs). That's a bit too easy if you ask me. What you really want is a bit more outwardness .. a slab of showmanship.

There was Brazilian footballer Alex da Rosa who, during a press conference held in order for four of his teammates to apologise for a raucous late-night drinking spree, stripped naked and showcased his wares to a room full of photographers and journalists. Fired!

Then Uruguayan striker Mario Leguizamon, who having been sent off by female ref Silvia Reyes (Jose's Mum presumably), made insulting sexual connotations .. not to her face, oh no, but in a televised interview!

I mean, a bit of discretion, guys. At least in the case of Oxford United's Julian Alsop - and his firing for 'attacking' a youth team player with a banana - he had the forethought to keep it behind closed doors, or should that be back doors?
