"I
am not a number, I'm a free man," bellowed the
Prisoner. Greedy sod, he should have been grateful,
because Coventry City striker Paul Williams is remembered
in the tomes of football folly by just a solitary letter.
Yes, one blessed letter.
CARE
FOR A CUFF? PRE-SEASON GETS UNDERWAY... MONDAY
14th JULY 2008
Good to see those
lovely Soul Crew lads warming up for the
new season in style.
It was a Lacoste and Stone Island frenzy
in the streets of Merthyr Tydfil at the
weekend after the Southern Leaguers hosted
Cardiff City in a pre-season friendly.
Yes .. friendly - the clue is in the title.
But not according to South Wales' finest,
who saw enough tension and territorial
aggression to want to kick seven shades
of the brown stuff out of each other.
The result, five arrests and a number
of warnings. Oh, and 3-1 to the Bluebirds.
Thing is, I've been to both Penydarren
Park (Merthyr's home stronghold) and Ninian
Park, and found both relatively placid
places - you could even drink on the terraces
at Tydfil .. and thinking about it, most
of our players performed as if they were
half-cut. But you do fear for the future
of local pre-season affairs such as these,
given the hostility on show.
And besides, shouldn't Cardiff be saving
themselves? They've the small and hopelessly
insignificant matter of two derbies against
Swansea to contend with for the new campaign,
eh boyo?
