"I am not a number, I'm a free man," bellowed the Prisoner. Greedy sod, he should have been grateful, because Coventry City striker Paul Williams is remembered in the tomes of football folly by just a solitary letter. Yes, one blessed letter.

CELTIC FANS IN MATHEMATICAL MIRE...
THURSDAY 17th APRIL 2008

I had to look on in some disbelief at all of the Celtic fans jumping around on invisible pogo-sticks last night as JVO Hesselink grabbed an injury-time winner against Rangers.

Elation is one thing, a victory over Auld Firm rivals another, but references to the league title being 'back on' is akin to the kind of psychological wobbliness that results out of spending too long with the mother-in-law.

Temporarily, my bowels stirred, and with a whiff of excitement I glanced at the SPL table, thinking that maybe I'd missed a succession of Rangers defeats, or some sort of mass points deduction last copyrighted by Leeds United, but sure enough they are still a point clear, having played two games less. So what's all the fuss about?

Celtic shouldn't be jumping around like kangaroos, they should be assembling a hall of mirrors from second-hand antiques stories in Dennistoun and taking good long looks at them (err, and through them, too).

There's another Celtic v Rangers clash to come, but even offering that one to the Hoops, the Gers would still need to drop points in two of their remaining four games against the fearful might of Hibs, Motherwell, Dundee United and Aberdeen, with their Glasgow foes winning all of their closing fixtures.

It ain't gonna happen, but you've got to love good old-fashioned blind football optimism.

Good to see a punch-up at the end of the game too. I can only imagine how many people did as I did and wound through the five minutes of drab highlights on the Beeb website just to get to the handbags.

Now that's entertainment!
