And they're off!
Well, in Scotland at least.
While the rest of us have to wait at least
another week to get cracking, some Scottish
clubs are already two matches into the
campaign, with last week's Challenge Cup
1st Round encounters the mere teaser to
the cracking open of the league season
piggybank on Saturday.
Most of the attention found itself on
the Cowdenbeath v Annan Athletic clash
(no, really), with the visitors joining
the Scottish League 'elite' for the first
time following the demise of Gretna, and
kicking off the campaign in some style
with a 4-1 away success that sees them
top Division Three. Will it last? It's
doubtful. Will most of us even forget
to check their result next week. Yes,
very probably.
Some interesting transfer movements further
up the ladder though, and it just goes
to prove that it's not only our Premier
League clubs who know where to pluck promising
youngsters from the relative unknown.
Division Two side Queens Park certainly
have a lot of fingers in scouting pies,
but I'm sure their Publicity Officer must
have been at the Tennants Super when he
dashed out his press release last week.
For a start, the club have supposedly
been on an all-expenses training camp
in Germany (was there no room at the mammoth
Hampden Park where they play their home
matches?), hosted by manager Gardner Spiers
(real name). In addition, 'the Spiders'
(don't ask) have been flashing the cash
in the transfer market, signing David
Murray (isn't he Rangers chairman?), and
two geezers called Paul Harkins and Ryan
Holmes .. standard enough, you might think,
until it's revealed that they were signed
from Neilston Juniors and Knightswood
Juveniles respectively.
The latter, in particular, doesn't
sound like the sort of place you want
to be recruiting young talent from, although
at least the Publicity man will have some
drinking partners.
